Job Description

Reports to: Mechanical Engineer – Crane

Department: Engineering

Job Grade: 11


  • Provide efficient and effective maintenance for cranes and RTGs by carrying out preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance tasks as defined by Superintendent and Foreman adhering to the safety and quality standards
  • Responsible for Safety and Discipline in the work area
  • Carry out mechanical maintenance, fault finding and monitoring of the cranes & RTGs and carry out the (asks assigned by Foreman and Supervisor
  • Ensure maximum operational availability of cranes by diagnostic work and repair methods
  • Carry out duties independently when called out and report breakdowns and faults
  • Assume additional responsibility for crane & RIG maintenance in the absence of Foreman
  • Ensure that emergency work is followed up by reporting to Foreman
  • Ensure work practice conforms to safety regulations and procedures
  • Ensure that all preventive maintenance (mechanical) is conducted as defined in the system
  • Attend breakdowns as reported by Staff & Equipment Control on immediate basis
  • Ensure accurate, up to date information is provided in the work order for input into the system
  • Ensure that work order is generated (in coordination with optimization team) for all mechanical work performed on the cranes
  • Adhere to the preventive maintenance schedule end make sure all items on the checklist are done diligently
  • Submit correct information about start time and end time of maintenance activity
  • Obtain approval of superintendent/ foreman before making purchase requisition and submitting to stores
  • Ensures tidiness and cleanliness of workshop facilities and all equipment for which his team is responsible
  • Submit routine inspection and monitoring reports as required
  • Number and nature of accidents. Ensure safety principles are followed
  • Maintain constant communication with the Superintendents to ensure effective crane workshop operations
  • Responsible to maintain safety and discipline in the work area
  • Ensure compliance with Fatal Risk Standards
  • Ensure compliance with Safe Work Practices
  • Ensure compliance with HSE policy
  • Reporting accidents and near misses’ in accordance with defined safety procedures

Special Skills & Knowledge

Qualification & Exp.


  • Experience in container in sea port and/or heavy equipment environment o Mandatory: 3 to 4 years



  • Preferable: Diploma in mechanical engineering
  • Preferable experience in working on heavy equipment in ports, mining, steel industries
  • Detailed knowledge of a wide range of mechanical equipment, diesel engines, transmissions, pneumatic & hydraulic systems, brakes etc.
  • Knowledge about lifting chain and ropes
  • Conversant with technical/parts manuals, and drawings
  • Fully conversant with safety procedures
  • Good communication skills
